Assessing Obukhov Length and Friction Velocity from Floating Lidar Observations: A Data Screening and Sensitivity Computation Approach

This work presents a parametric-solver algorithm for estimating atmospheric stability and friction velocity from floating Doppler wind lidar (FDWL) observations close to the mast of IJmuiden in North Sea. The focus study was two-fold: (i) examine sensitivity computational retrieved variables derived classes (the latter through confusion-matrix theory), (ii) present data screening procedures FDWLs fixed reference instrumentation. performance estimation assessed with speed temperature mast. A fixed-to-mast (DWL) also available, which provides wind-speed free sea-motion perturbations. When comparing FDWL- mast-derived mean speeds, obtained determination coefficient as high that DWL against (?2=0.996) root square error (RMSE) 0.25 m/s. From 82-day measurement campaign at (10,833 10 min records), parametric showed atmosphere neutral (31% cases), stable (28%), or near-neutral (19%) during most campaign. These figures satisfactorily agree values estimated measurements (31%, 27%, 19%, respectively).
